{"id":170,"date":"2015-04-08T17:02:57","date_gmt":"2015-04-08T22:02:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zachbarnesonwriting.wordpress.com\/?p=170"},"modified":"2015-04-08T17:02:57","modified_gmt":"2015-04-08T22:02:57","slug":"drama-and-comedy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zacharybarnes.us\/index.php\/2015\/04\/08\/drama-and-comedy\/","title":{"rendered":"Drama and Comedy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I think the line between TV dramas and comedies is drawn in wealth. \u00a0And Maslow, or something.<\/p>\n<p>These things are important, from a writer-ly perspective. \u00a0It&#8217;s good to identify the tropes, so that you can tweak them to your own design and not fall prey to clich\u00e9 (hey, that&#8217;s catchy). \u00a0It&#8217;s also good to understand societally erected boundaries (the middle-schoolers among us are snickering), so that you know what to expect if\/when you break them.<\/p>\n<p>Comedy thrives\u00a0in upper middle class environments. \u00a0Think\u00a0<em>Friends, Modern Family, Big Bang Theory<\/em>, and even\u00a0<em>Family Guy<\/em>. \u00a0Sure, the cast occasionally talks about money issues, but they&#8217;re never a real problem. \u00a0I mean, no one is ever threatened with starvation, probably because starvation is definitely not funny. \u00a0And that&#8217;s the whole catch: modern comedies exist in an illusory world, where the jokes can be focused upon because they&#8217;re not being threatened by reality. \u00a0Unless you&#8217;re talking dark comedy, but that&#8217;s another story.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/zachbarnesonwriting.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/llama-2.jpg?ssl=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-173\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/zachbarnesonwriting.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/llama-2.jpg?resize=218%2C232&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"llama 2\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Drama, on the other hand, exists on the extremes. \u00a0Things are dramatic if you either have no money or too much money. \u00a0Too little power, or too much. \u00a0<em>Game of Thrones, How to Get Away with Murder, Soap Opera, Downton Abbey&#8230;<\/em> Everyone is rolling in the $$$ or dirt-poor. \u00a0Probably because things get complicated when you move toward each extreme. \u00a0Life is dicier, and drama thrives on dicey schtuff.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_172\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-172\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/zachbarnesonwriting.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/rising-wallpaper-1680x1050.jpg?ssl=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-172\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/zachbarnesonwriting.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/rising-wallpaper-1680x1050.jpg?resize=300%2C188&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Dramatic tree is dramatic.\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-172\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dramatic tree is dramatic.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>An interesting practice is to identify where on this slider a show\/your character falls. \u00a0What makes situations funny? \u00a0What makes them dramatic? \u00a0You might agree with what I&#8217;ve said above, or you might find something different (and if you do, please share it!)<\/p>\n<p>As for the writing process, understanding this spectrum and pinpointing where your characters fall is a great tool that you can use to explore the nature of your work or your character more deeply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I\u2019m on facebook at:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/zachbarnesonwriting\">https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/zachbarnesonwriting<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">And Twitter: @ZacharyBarnes4<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Like or follow me if you enjoy\u00a0the blog!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u2013<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Don\u2019t steal\u00a0my words. \u00a0They\u2019re mine.
